Tagging Letters – Part Of Graffiti Are Here To Stay
Italian word “graffiato” is the origin of the word graffiti. In layman’s language the meaning of graffiti is nothing but the writings, paintings which are done on the walls. Even the word graffiato from which graffiti came from means scratched. All the messages written, scratched, painted or scribbled on the walls can be called as graffiti. There are many styles of writing graffiti. One of them is called as tagging letters. In simple language it means writing or scribbling on the wall. It is one of the basic styles of creating graffiti. It also means that you are writing a message on something which is not your property. Tagging letters are usually written in one single color. That color is used to write message on such a wall which color contrasts with it, for e.g. on a white wall the graffiti will be written in black. This will be called as tagging. Tagging letters also mean that the writer is leaving his or her signature on or in the side of his or her artwork. This is done to follow all the famous artists who always did their signature after completing their artwork. Tagging was done in a different ways too. It is called as dust tag which literally means writing or scribbling in dust on a surface. This type of tagging was done by the artists for practicing.
The art of graffiti is such a vast subject that the tagging letters form a very small part of it. There are hundred other forms of graffiti. Now that the graffiti is considered as an art form many people are trying to invent new styles of writing graffiti. Though there is still a debate going on about the legal status of art of graffiti, it is spreading like anything. Rather we should say that the ongoing debate is one of the reasons for development of graffiti as a culture now. Graffiti is a form of expressing the unrest, the rebelling attitude as well opposition to anything which is prevailing at that particular time. We can safely say that graffiti is a non violent way of expressing your views which are dead against the prevalent views and practices. It has been part of our society for so many years that even if we want to eradicate it from the society, it is not an easy task. The legal systems of almost all the countries have declared graffiti as a part of vandalism, still there is no stopping it. Whether we like it or not, there are still going to be instances of the proverbial writings on the wall, which we can neither ignore nor do anything about it. Graffiti is a permanent part of the civilization, so as long as there are civilized people confirming to something, there are going to be people who want to swim against the current. As long as there are these rebellious people, graffiti is going to be in existence.
